Do you need a GUI to run PowerDNS?

PowerDNS works perfectly well without a GUI. But as more people manage zones and records, a web interface can make everyday DNS tasks easier to access, review, and manage.

  • Managing zones without config files

ZoneControl gives your team a visual way to manage zones and records without editing configuration files or working from the command line. Routine changes become easier to make and easier for colleagues to understand.

  • When a 3rd-party admin UI is enough - and when it isn't

A free third-party UI can be a good choice if it provides the features you need and your team is comfortable maintaining the integration itself.

The trade-off changes when you need a supported solution with a defined roadmap, predictable compatibility with PowerDNS Authoritative Server, and someone to contact when something goes wrong. That’s where ZoneControl is different: it is developed and maintained by PowerDNS as an integral part of PowerDNS Authoritative Essentials.

"Community works fine - why pay for support?"

For many teams, PowerDNS Community is all they need. Essentials becomes relevant when DNS is important enough that your team wants commercial support, defined response times, a supported admin interface, and direct access to PowerDNS expertise when an issue can’t wait.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need ZoneControl to manage my domains?

PowerDNS Authoritative Server can be managed without ZoneControl. ZoneControl adds a web-based interface for teams that prefer to manage zones and records without relying on configuration files or command-line workflows.

  • Is community support not enough?

It can be. PowerDNS has an active open-source community and extensive documentation. Commercial support is intended for teams that also need a formal support channel and defined response times when an issue requires expert assistance.

  • What exactly does the SLA cover?

Your subscription includes email support for PowerDNS Authoritative Server and ZoneControl on business days from 9:00am to 6:00pm CET/EDT. Requests submitted during support hours receive a response within eight hours. Outside support hours, you can expect a response on the next business day.

  • How is this package different from a free admin UI?

The main difference isn’t simply that ZoneControl has a GUI. It’s part of a supported PowerDNS package, developed and maintained alongside the underlying DNS technology. With a third-party UI, features, compatibility, maintenance, and support depend on the individual project.
